Please Note: What I’m about to share with you CAN help you wake up each day feeling glad to be alive and fortunate, not just because you’ve been able to successfully re-enter the workforce and have the job, the career, and the profession you’ve chosen, but because you know that you’re able to comfortably provide for yourself and your family and loved ones …
Rediscover All of the Passion, Success, Purpose, and Joy a Fulfilling Career Can Provide!
From the Desk of Karen Rose, LPCC
Does any of this sound familiar?
You’ve been looking and looking and applying for one job after another, yet you aren’t getting any interviews, or you haven’t been called back from the few interviews you’ve gotten, or no matter how hard you try, you either can’t seem to get comfortable and used to the idea of networking or you can’t make your current network pay off. What if you could figure out exactly what type of work brings the most purpose, passion, and meaning to your life, as well as know precisely what you need to do to convey that passion and present yourself and your skills in the best possible light, network successfully, nail your interviews, and land the job and career you want most?
You’ve been out of the work world for a while – whether due to an injury or illness, because you took time off to take care of an aging parent, or because you decided to be a stay-at-home parent for a number of years – and now you’re not sure how to bring your skills up to date and/or apply any new skills you’ve acquired to re-entering the workforce after such an extended absence. What if you could create a plan for exactly what you want to achieve – whether that’s picking up in the same profession where you left off, entering a new field, or going into business for yourself – and know that you CAN find a way to bring your skills up to date, apply all you’ve learned, and find or create the career you desire?
After sending out hundreds, or even thousands, of résumés, and trying to re-enter the work world unsuccessfully for months (if not years), your lack of connection to others and your lack of confidence in your own abilities is leaving you feeling anxious, isolated, stressed out, depressed, or at the end of your rope. What if, instead of going around and around in circles feeling more embarrassed, isolated, distressed, and hopeless, you could identify the reasons for your lack of success and use that same rope to reclaim your self-confidence and come up with a plan to address and resolve the issues that are holding back… once and for all?!?
Whether you’re looking to…
- Simply pick up where you left off when you left your last job; or
- Find a career path that brings more meaning and joy to your life (no matter your age); or
- Identify your priorities and better understand your career options; or
- Improve your interviewing, networking, and job search skills; or
- Cope with, reduce, and eliminate feelings of anxiety, isolation, stress, depression or overwhelm, so you can move forward with confidence and optimism; or
- Support your family and yourself doing what you love; or
- Just figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life…
I’ve got GREAT news for you –
You Are In The Right Place, Right Now!
Welcome to Career Therapy!
My name is Karen Rose, and in addition to being a career counselor and licensed psychotherapist, I’ve supervised career counselors at John F. Kennedy University’s Career Center and San Francisco State University’s Career Counseling and Development Center and have been “quietly” transforming the career coaching and career counseling landscape in the San Francisco Bay Area over the course of the last three decades.
I don’t say any of this to brag. On the contrary… I’ve been where you are.
I’ve struggled. I’ve hit rock bottom. I’ve thrown thousands upon thousands of dollars on coaching schemes and self-improvement systems that haven’t paid off. And more!
I’ve experienced utter failure, and fought back from it on more than one occasion. And I’ve experienced ultimate success. And if I can do it, so can you.
To be perfectly clear… What I’m sharing with you today doesn’t just come from my professional experience providing career counseling and psychotherapy services to clients for the better part of three decades. Nor does it come from attending countless programs, workshops, and seminars on career counseling, coaching, and professional development. I speak to you as someone who’s been there.
As a woman who was born without sight, I realized early on that the world isn’t “made” for any one of us.
We each have to discover our own passions and joys, understand our own strengths and weaknesses, and then create our own ways of thinking and getting things done. And it is with pride and joy that I’ve been able to do precisely this… not just in my own life, but by helping countless career counseling and coaching clients over the past 30 years figure out how to do the exact same thing for themselves!
Let me assure you that your past does NOT define you.
When you feel unsatisfied or stuck, underemployed or unemployed, it’s easy to look around and believe that everyone else is gainfully employed and happily moving forward.
But, despite the current low headline unemployment rate, the “real” unemployment rate is almost always double those headline numbers… which means, despite the rate of job growth we’ve seen over the past few years, 11.5 million Americans are still under- or unemployed. So you’re far from alone!
And, according to a Gallup poll, two-thirds of American employees are not engaged at work. Countless individuals are unhappy or dissatisfied in their careers, but feel pressures – both internal and external – to remain in their current positions.
The fact is, almost everyone faces career challenges, doubts, and re-assessments. And even the most experienced, dedicated and accomplished professionals feel stuck, lost in transition, or find themselves out of work at some point in their professional lives.
Yet, you CAN change your career and life story at any time.
Anyone, no matter where they are, has the power to meet seemingly insurmountable odds to transform their dreams into reality.
I know… Because I’ve helped countless people do precisely this.
Are you ready to restart and reclaim your career and your life and achieve the greatness you know, deep down, exists inside of you?!?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
I’m here to show you HOW you can do it, without compromising your values as you achieve success, no matter how dark things look right now.
If you’re wondering how to create the fulfilling and thriving professional life you know is possible somewhere deep down inside you – or you’re wondering why you can’t seem to do so – Career Therapy can help you understand what’s holding you back, and then adapt, transition and feel confident as you apply your talents, passions, and skills to a new career.
We’ll use the same concrete, strategic, and efficient career counseling, career coaching, and psychotherapy techniques I’ve developed and used over the past three decades to help countless individuals, so that you can learn and implement the skills necessary to find or create the career that best fits YOU!
It is possible, no matter how much you feel frustrated, stressed out, afraid, or that you’ve failed in the past. For example…
Case Study – “Clarice”
Clarice came to Career Therapy frustrated and discouraged. She’d been unemployed for over 7 months and, no matter what she tried, it seemed impossible for her to find a job.
Clarice was a 32-year-old, Art History major at the time, who had been gainfully employed managing one commercial art gallery or another ever since graduating university six years earlier. However, that had all come to an abrupt end when the last gallery she’d worked for shut its doors.
Despite the fact that Clarice was comfortable, and even enjoyed, working with people – and the fact that she’d gotten all of her previous positions through the connections she’d made – she couldn’t get over her discomfort with the idea of networking. And she found herself anxious to the point of being terrified when it came to actually interviewing (she’d never been through a formal interview process in her life).
After spending a couple of sessions together exploring Clarice’s fears and goals, it became clear that what Clarice wanted most was to continue working in the art world. She didn’t want to go into business for herself. And, while she was a naturally warm and likeable individual, she was simply uncomfortable and anxious about the idea of having to “sell herself.”
So, Clarice and I worked together to identify job and career options (art conservation and restoration, museum marketing and public relations, artist representation and management, etc.), while we simultaneously worked on improving her self-confidence and self-esteem, and on coping with and overcoming her discomfort and fears of networking and interviewing, through a series of cognitive-behavioral exercise, practice interview sessions, and by focusing her talking points and energy on her passion for the arts.
While the whole process took a couple of months, Clarice felt renewed and reinvigorated about her prospects and the job search process and eventually landed a position doing public relations work for a major metropolitan museum.
As Claire said to me afterwards, “Saying, ‘Thank you, Karen!’ seems trite. I never thought I’d be able to apply and interview for such an important position, let alone actually get it. You not only opened my eyes to the opportunities available to me, but helped me realize the self-confidence to go after what I wanted most and gave me the skills and tools to achieve it.”
Or, consider another client of mine…
Case Study – “Julia”
Julia came to see me because she wanted to re-enter the workforce after taking the better part of two decades “off” to be a stay-at-home mother for her two boys.
While she was more than ready to “get back to work” and wanted nothing more than to revive her career, she felt paralyzed when it came to the process of actually doing so. Where should she start? Should she go back to work in the marketing field she’d left previously or try something new? Should see “get a job” or work for herself? And, just what did she need to do when it came to reviving her skills, let alone learning how to navigate the job search process? A LOT had changed in the last 15+ years!
After several sessions together, Julia realized that one of the things holding her back was the feeling that she had to “start all over again” at the age of 52, which she definitely didn’t want to do. After some skill assessments, it also became clear that, while Julia hadn’t been involved in the marketing world for the past couple of decades, she was actively involved online (on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram) and in her community (she was active in a number of local charities and Meetup.com groups).
Given Julia’s interests in these areas and the huge network she’d grown over the years as an active parent, Julia and I worked together to round out her skills and she set out to start her own business doing marketing, public relations, and community outreach for a number of local non-profit and charitable organizations.
As Julia says, “It took a few months to pull it all together, but I couldn’t be happier. I’m doing work that I love with people, and in a community, I care about deeply. When we started, all I knew was that I wanted to get back to work, but I never dreamed I’d be able to create such a rewarding profession, let alone business, this late in life!”
And, then there’s…
Case Study – “Mark”
Mark had been a construction manager ever since graduating college 27 years ago, and he’d spent the better part of the past twenty years with just one firm. It had gotten to the point where Mark had been paid more than his immediate supervisors for years, yet he’d managed to avoid one round of layoffs after another. His luck had held out… until it didn’t.
At the age of 54, Mark was laid off. Too early to retire, yet too old to be a good hiring prospect for another firm… at least, that’s what Mark thought.
Mark came to me after being unemployed for well over a year. Fortunately, he’d had a severance package, which had helped in the beginning. And thankfully, his wife worked full time. But, Mark was becoming increasingly stressed and depressed, not only about his inability to find another job, but about the financial strain his lack of employment was putting on his family. Mark’s two girls were in the final years of high school, and Mark’s unemployment coupled with hist anxiety and depression were straining his relationship with his spouse.
Mark told me flat out that he didn’t think a career coach or counselor would be of much help, but he felt like he’d pretty much tried everything else and exhausted his options, so why not?
Mark and I initially worked together to help him better cope with his current financial situation and his deteriorating relationship with his wife and his own self-esteem. We also took an inventory of everything he’d done (the companies and positions he’d been applying to, how he’d been applying, what he’d been saying during the interviews he’d made it to, and so on).
It turned out that Mark had routinely made it to the interview stage, but often wasn’t called back. So, we spent a good deal of time working on his interviewing strategy and skills. And we also re-doubled Mark’s efforts on LinkedIn, as Mark had grown quite a network on the platform over the years, but hadn’t tapped it much during his job search as he wasn’t comfortable with the platform and didn’t know the best ways use it.
As is often the case, it took Mark and I a couple of months of work together to help him overcome his anxiety and depression and repair his self-confidence and self-esteem, which went a long way towards repairing his relationship with his wife… And, I know that work, plus the LinkedIn and interview coaching we did together, is what finally allowed Mark to land a new job as the regional construction manager for a national chain of private daycare centers.
As Mark said in an email to me afterwards, “I can’t thank you enough, Karen! To tell you the truth, I had very little faith in you when we got started. But, it turns out that’s because I had so very little faith in myself. By helping me regain the latter, you provided the former… And it’s all paid off more than I could have imagined. I can honestly say that working with you as been one of the better investments I’ve made. You may even have saved my marriage and my life!”
One thing each of these three had in common – as do most of the people who come to me for help – is that, while they may believe their issue is about their skills, or their network, or how well they interview, the underlying problem is almost always our core beliefs about what is necessary or possible.
Accordingly, a large part of the work I do with clients is helping them shake themselves free of the limiting beliefs that are holding them back.
What limiting beliefs are you holding on to?
- Do you feel like you don’t have the skills necessary to find re-launch your career or start a business or a career in a new field?
- Do you feel unemployable, or do you think you’re just not the type of person who can network or interview successfully?
- Do you really want to go back to school, or be an artist, or run your own business, or _________, but feel you’re too old, or it’s too late, or your family won’t support your decision, or you don’t have the time or money to make it happen?
- Do you think you can’t make any money doing the things you love most?
Well, let me tell you… You can!
You either already have the skills you need or you can easily acquire them. You can always make yourself attractive to employers. You can learn to network and nail your interviews, even if you’re afraid of doing so. And, it’s never too late to make money, to make a living, doing what you love (I’ve even helped people find or create careers as artists, musicians, and video game testers).
The problem is, most people aren’t even aware of the limiting beliefs they have… And, even if they DID know about them, they wouldn’t know how to change them.
It’s not your fault you’re struggling to find or create the job or career of your dreams – or that you still aren’t sure exactly what that would look like, or that you know what it looks and feels like and still haven’t achieved it. In fact, we all find ourselves in this situation at some point or other.
We all find ourselves wondering what our dreams are, what we truly want from our careers. Then we take our first steps towards creating that professional life only to find ourselves facing obstacles and challenges.
The main difference between those who go on to realize their dreams and those who don’t is that the ones who succeed are willing to ask for and accept support and guidance to help them along the way.
Career Therapy Is Here to Help!
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
No matter what’s holding you back, I know first hand that you CAN make a great living doing something other people believe is impossible.
I’ve done just that.
And I spend my professional life helping people just like you do the same… think outside the box when it comes to what’s possible and what one can do to make a great living and a great life!
I’ve helped people go back to school well after the age of 30 and even 40 (even med school and law school), as well as start new careers in these professions well into their 40s and 50s. And, I’ve helped people start new businesses in their 50s and 60s…
There are all kinds of shortcuts people don’t know about when it comes to fast-tracking a new job or career; such as university extension courses designed to get people into grad school in under a year to special three-month boot camps designed to help people get jobs in big tech companies, to name but a couple.
But, again, the biggest hurdle to your success is you.
Yes, I can help you with:
- Career Testing and Assessment;
- Professional Networking;
- Job Search Strategies;
- Resume Writing, Cover Letters, and LinkedIn Profile Reviews;
- Interview and Salary Negotiation Coaching; and
- Navigating the Workplace and Professional Development.
But, to be perfectly honest, none of these things is likely to help much or lead to your success if you don’t move past whatever’s been holding you back from the inside.
This is why, no matter what specific job search, career building, or professional development services a client needs, I’ve found it’s almost always necessary to employ some type of cognitive behavioral tools and techniques with my clients to help them understand their core beliefs around what’s possible when it comes to finding work, making money, making a living, and making a life.
This is what makes Career Therapy unique!
Many people who are struggling to re-enter the workforce seek the professional assistance of a career counselor or career coach, which is great. I know. I am one.
The problem is that, while a career counselor or career coach can help you with all of the logistical aspects of finding a job or career, they’re not trained to help you with the myriad emotional and psychological issues that come up for many of us when we find ourselves unemployed for any length of time or when we’re trying to re-enter the work world.
Career coaches and counselors typically aren’t able to help you with the anxiety, stress, depression, isolation, and deeper relationship issues that many of us face.
This is when professional counseling and psychotherapy can be vital. Only licensed mental health professionals are truly equipped to help you through these types of emotional and psychological stumbling blocks, as well as teach you how to overcome them. Again, I know. I am one.
However, most mental health professionals are not equipped to actually help you find or create a new career. They can’t help you learn effective job search strategies, or with the ins and outs of networking, or create powerful, attention-getting resumes, or perform well during your interviews, or create a business plan if you decide to “go it alone.”
As someone rather unique in this field, I’ve been fortunate enough to help clients with all of these things … both as a career counselor and coach and as a licensed marriage and family therapist. And, I created Career Therapy to bridge the gap between career counseling, career coaching, and psychotherapy!
As I said, the biggest problem I see in my career counseling and career coaching business is that people’s beliefs about what they can and can’t do, about what’s possible, get in the way of them achieving their goals.
My career counseling and coaching practice almost inevitably leads to some form of professional counseling and psychotherapy work to help my clients see the limitations they’re unnecessarily creating and the obstacles they’re putting in their own way, as well as how to overcome them… And, they do learn to overcome them… And you, too, can learn to overcome your own self-created doubts, limitations, and roadblocks to your success!
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
Still not sure if Career Therapy is right for you?
It can be exciting to think about how much better you’ll feel in your new job or career, but getting there takes work, dedication, focus and a willingness to come out of your shell… I get it.
I know it’s not easy. Heck, if it was easy, you would have done it by now.
But, you need to stop listening to that loud voice inside of you that keeps telling you why you should be afraid, that you can’t do this, that you’re not good enough, that you’re too old, and that what you want isn’t possible.
Instead, you need to quiet yourself (try it right now!)… Quiet yourself and listen to that softer voice that knows deep down inside that you CAN do anything. You just have to be willing to put in the effort necessary.
What do you keep putting off? What do you want to achieve in the months ahead? Who do you see yourself becoming in the years ahead?
You have an opportunity to take action and find or create a successful and fulfilling career and the life you dream about…
But if you don’t get started now, then when?
So, let’s make today the day you change your life.
Amazing things happen when we are clear and we take control of our careers, our lives, and our happiness with no apologies.
I want you to be able to bring your best and brightest self to the world and do work that you enjoy. That’s why I created Career Therapy. The support, care, and professional counseling and coaching I provide are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.
Every day there are people just like you who are re-entering the workforce or launching a new career or business. They’re living the life they were meant to live, and they’re having fun and feeling amazing doing it.
- Imagine not only finding a job, but feeling like a superstar at work because you’re finally in your element; surrounded by projects and people that inspire you and make you want to give your best.
- Imagine feeling great about networking and nailing your interviews because you finally have the clarity, inspiration, motivation, mental focus, and drive to pursue your career goals and communicate your unique talents, skills, and passion.
- Imagine bumping into an old colleague and telling them how happy you are at work now.
- Imagine loving the work that you do and it energizing and inspiring you.
- Imagine having the time and energy to play with your kids, exercise, spend time with friends and loved ones, or try that new hobby you’ve wanted to explore.
- Imagine being able to do this, again and again, every time you find yourself in need of a career reset.
Imagine all of this and more… because it’s possible. It’s a decision you make, and I’m ready to stand by you every step of the way.
