Are You Ready to Turn Your Knowledge and Skills into a Valuable and Rewarding Career You Love?!?
From the Desk of Karen Rose, LPCC
Does any of this sound familiar?
You feel disorganized, unprepared, and as if you’re starting at square one when it comes to the job-search process. What if you knew exactly what position you wanted and what you needed to do to get hired and could quickly get organized, prepare for, and master professional networking, writing effective resumes and cover letters, successfully using LinkedIn, and the interview and salary negotiation process?
You feel paralyzed, stuck, or trapped because you either don’t want a career in the field you’ve studied or your parents or relatives are pushing you in a specific direction. What if you could create a personal roadmap that helps you get unstuck and self-assuredly create and navigate a path towards YOUR vision of success?
You know what you want to do, but you don’t think it’s possible or that you have the skills or experience necessary to make it happen. What if you could confidently read between the lines and understand precisely how to apply your knowledge, skills, and accomplishments to achieve exactly what you want to achieve, regardless of whether or not you have the “perfect” major, internships, professional connections, or work experience?
Whether you’re looking to…
- Start your first internship or job search;
- Identify your priorities, better understand your career options, and define your vision of success;
- Figure out how to turn your college major into the job and career you want;
- Grow your professional network and create resumes and cover letters that make you “leap out” as someone prospective employers want to put on their “definitely interview” list;
- Better understand, appreciate, and communicate your value during interviews and salary negotiations, so you not only get the job you want but also get paid what you’re worth;
- Reduce feelings of anxiety, stress and overwhelm, so you can feel more confident and move forward in creating the professional life you desire;
- Finally become financially self-sufficient; or
- Figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life …
I’ve got GREAT news for you –
You Are In The Right Place, Right Now!
Welcome to Career Therapy!
Whether you’re still in school or a recent graduate, you’re likely well aware that you’re entering a highly competitive and increasingly demanding work world… an environment in which you need any edge you can get.
Identifying the right jobs and career paths, knowing how to approach potential connections, creating powerful and effective resumes, and preparing for interviews can all be stressful… even overwhelming.
In fact, some graduates are so stressed about landing a job – any job – that they often grab the first position they’re offered. But, taking the wrong job can sometimes be worse than not having any job at all.
Unfortunately, many recent grads lack the awareness, experience, and skills necessary to get the positions that will truly help launch the careers they desire.
That’s where I come in…
Hi! My name is Karen Rose, and in addition to being a career counselor and licensed psychotherapist, I’ve supervised career counselors at John F. Kennedy University’s Career Center and San Francisco State University’s Career Counseling and Development Center and have been “quietly” transforming the career coaching and career counseling landscape in the San Francisco Bay Area over the course of the last three decades.
And, while it may seem difficult to believe, I know what you’re going through… I’ve been where you are.
As a woman who was born without sight, I’ve had to overcome more than my fair share of challenges… even long before I graduated. And, I realized early on that the world isn’t “made” for any one of us.
We each have to discover our own passions and joys, understand our own strengths and weaknesses, and then create our own ways of thinking and getting things done. And it is with pride and joy that I’ve been able to do precisely this… not just in my own life, but by helping countless recent grads over the past 30 years figure out how to do the exact same thing for themselves!
Let me assure you that – regardless of the skills, experience, and professional connections you have or have not acquired to date – your past does NOT define you.
As Barbara Sher said, “You live the good life, not by doing what you can do, but by doing what you want to do.”
Your future will be decided by what you do today, and each and every day moving forward.
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
Yes, getting a job out of college can be challenging. Employers have high expectations, even for young adults who are taking the first steps of their careers.
We’ve all seen the headlines. For example…
- According to McKinsey & Company’s Education to Employment Report, “Only 42% of worldwide employers believe new graduates are adequately prepared for work.”
- According to an article in The New York Times, “One of the big problems for new employees is that they don’t know what they don’t know, especially when it comes to soft skills – like working with people and being self-motivated…”
- And, CBS Money Watch concurred, saying, “Fifty-nine percent of U.S. hiring managers said they had difficulty finding candidates with so-called ‘soft skills’ – the interpersonal skills that can make a workplace function smoothly.”
There’s obviously a gap between the skills recent graduates think they have to offer and what employers want and expect from them at work.
But, just as obviously, you’re far from alone!
This is one of the reasons career counseling and career coaching for recent college graduates has become so important.
Yes, colleges and universities do a great job providing students the knowledge they need to succeed. But they’re often not helping students acquire the interpersonal skills that are so highly prized by employers, nor are they teaching students how to create personal roadmaps to career success.
In fact, career coaching has almost become something of a requisite for new graduates who want to successfully transition from being a “student” to being a “professional,” and the career coaching services I provide are specifically designed to help you bridge the gap between college and the real world.
Even if you’re still in school – in fact, especially if you’re still in school – career counseling and coaching can be of tremendous benefit…
How?
Well, did you know that the vast majority of jobs – between 70 and 80 percent – are secured through networking, personal introductions, and internal referrals?
Securing the right internship can be crucial to landing the job that launches your career, and I work with students to help them target the best internships and develop the skills necessary to land those positions.
It’s never too soon to start working towards your future. And if we work together to map out your career path while you’re still a student, it’ll be that much easier for you to start the career you want as soon as you graduate.
But, whether or not you’ve had one or more internships, or you think you have the skills or experience you need or not, or you think your dreams are out of your reach, or you keep saying to yourself, “I’ve never worked in the ‘real world,’ so how am I going to or why should anyone hire me?” let me assure you…
Each and every one of us, no matter where we are, has the power to meet seemingly insurmountable odds and transform our dreams into reality!
I know firsthand… Because I’ve helped countless grads do precisely this.
Are you ready to create the career and life you know, deep down, exists inside of you?!?
I’m here to show you HOW you can do it, without compromising your values as you achieve success, no matter how difficult things look right now.
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
If you’re at all worried about being able to create the fulfilling and thriving professional life you desire, or simply wonder why you can’t seem to get hired for a position you know you’re qualified for, Career Therapy can help you understand what’s holding you back and then adapt and feel confident as you apply your talents, passions, and skills to launching the career you want most.
We’ll use the same concrete, strategic, and efficient career counseling and coaching techniques I’ve developed and used over the past three decades to help other grads just like you, so that you can learn and implement the skills necessary to find or create the career that best fits YOU!
It is possible, no matter how frustrated, stressed out, or afraid you may feel. For example …
Case Study – “Amanda”
Amanda graduated from San Jose State University in 2013 with a major in fine arts and had been searching for a job for almost three years. She’d moved back in with her parents, was working part time in cafes and in retail, and she was quickly losing hope that she’d get started in any career, much less one she wanted.
When I first asked Amanda what she really wanted to do, her response was, “I just want to get a job!” But the more we discussed the matter the more Amanda realized she was applying for jobs that she didn’t really want. As Amanda said afterwards, “When someone asks you questions for an hour and really cares about you and the answers you’re giving, it really makes you think and be honest with yourself.”
After several coaching sessions, Amanda became convinced that she wanted to pursue a career in graphic design, as well as develop other interests. And, at the end of one of our sessions, Amanda revealed a long-held desire to try improvisational comedy.
I encouraged Amanda to pursue her passions, and we worked together to polish up her résumé and improve her interviewing and networking skills.
Instead of “finding a job,” Amanda used the professional networking skills she gained to build up a roster of clients she does graphic design work for on a contract basis. This, in turn, has allowed her to save up enough money to move to New York (where she’s always wanted to live) and get a place with a couple of friends… and she’s even started taking improv classes!
Or, consider another client of mine…
Case Study – “Chris”
Chris graduated from Boston College with a major in environmental studies and, after a brief post-college internship at a Napa Valley winery, had moved back home to Baltimore to be closer to his ailing mother.
Although he wanted a full-time position that would put his environmental knowledge to use, he could only land part-time work as a marketing rep for a solar energy startup in California. He wasn’t happy in marketing, and he didn’t feel like he was doing the work he was “supposed” to be doing. And, while he wanted to stay close to his mother, he kept applying for positions across the country afraid that he had no other choice.
In our first sessions together, I helped Chris write down and prioritize his goals, as well as how we could achieve them together, and I gave him homework at the end of each session.
A year later, after a lot of diligence and persistence, Chris landed a full-time, policy research position at an environmental think tank in Arlington, Virginia, which not only offered him the career path he was looking for, but also allowed him to remain close to home and his mom.
And, then there’s…
Case Study – “Maria”
When Maria graduated from St John’s University in 2012, she was armed with a degree in television and film and lots of ambition. She headed off to California to start an internship helping develop a series for MTV. It was a dream come true… Almost.
Unfortunately, Maria wasn’t asked to continue on after the internship and couldn’t afford to keep living in California, so she moved back home to live with her parents in Fishers, Indiana.
After several years working a variety of part-time jobs while trying to fund and launch her own projects, she felt like she was spinning her wheels and not really getting anywhere. That’s about the time she contacted me for help.
After our initial conversations, it was clear that Maria really wanted to “do her own thing,” but she didn’t really know what that looked like. We worked together over the course of several sessions to figure out what Maria enjoyed most and how she could create it.
Two months later, Maria started her own business helping people develop strategies for launching creative projects (such as commercials, videos, and websites), while she continued to work on short films of her own. As Maria says, “My work with Karen really helped me clarify not only what I wanted to do, but how I wanted to do it, and what I needed to get done to make it happen.”
Three years on, Maria has become something of a coach herself, and is now doing work she loves that also affords her the time and flexibility she needs to be able to continue creating short films of her own.
One thing each of these three had in common – as do most of the people who come to me for help – is that, while they may have believed their issue was their lack of experience, or how well their resumes are written, how well they interviewed, or whether or not they had the right connections, the underlying problem almost always has to do with knowing and being clear about what we want and our core beliefs about what is necessary or possible.
Accordingly, a large part of the work I do with clients is helping them get clear about what they want to create and shake themselves free of any limiting beliefs that are holding them back.
What limiting beliefs are you holding on to?
- Do you feel like, since you haven’t had the “right” internships or a job in your chosen industry, no one will hire you?
- Do you really want to be an artist, or run your own business, or _________, but feel your family won’t support your decision, or you don’t have the time or money to make it happen?
- Do you think you can’t make a good living doing the things you love most?
Well, let me tell you… You can!
You can get the job you want without having three years of internships in similar positions. You can make money doing what you love (I’ve helped people find or create careers as artists, musicians, and even video game testers).
The problem is, most people aren’t aware of the limiting beliefs they have… And, even if they DID know about them, they wouldn’t know how to change them.
It’s not your fault you’re still struggling to find a job, let alone find or create the career of your dreams – or that you still aren’t sure exactly what that would look like, or that you know what it looks and feels like but don’t know how to go about creating it. In fact, this is where we all start out.
We all start at the same point, wondering what our dreams are, what we truly want from our careers, and then taking our first steps toward creating that professional success.
The main difference between those who achieve their dreams and those who don’t is the ones who succeed are willing to ask for and accept support and guidance to help them along the way.
Career Therapy Can Help!
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
No matter what’s holding you back, I know first hand that you CAN make a great living doing something other people believe is impossible.
I’ve done just that.
And I spend my professional life helping people just like you do the same… think outside the box when it comes to not only finding a great job but about what’s possible and what one can do to make a great living and a great life!
I’ve helped many college students land multiple internships in the companies and industries they want to work in most… I’ve helped countless college students and recent graduates gain paid positions – often before they even finish school… And I’ve helped numerous clients in their 20s and 30s not only determine what it is they want most, but also what they need to do to create it, whether that means figuring out how to get in at a company they’ve always wanted to work for, become self-employed, or start their own businesses.
There are all kinds of shortcuts people don’t know about when it comes to fast-tracking a new career… Anything is truly possible!
The biggest hurdle to your success is you.
Yes, I can help you with:
- Career Testing and Assessment;
- Professional Networking;
- Job Search Strategies;
- Resume Writing, Cover Letters, and LinkedIn Profile Reviews;
- Interview and Salary Negotiation Coaching; and
- Navigating the Workplace and Professional Development.
But, to be perfectly honest, none of these things is likely to help much or lead to your success if you don’t move past whatever’s been holding you back from the inside.
This is why I approach career counseling and career coaching strategically and holistically.
Yes, I can help you identify and showcase your strengths, experience, and passion. But, no matter what specific career building and professional development services a client needs, I’ve found it’s almost always necessary to employ some type of cognitive behavioral tools and techniques with my clients to help them understand their core beliefs around what’s possible when it comes to making money, making a living, finding a fulfilling career, and creating a life they truly love.
This is what makes Career Therapy unique!
Many college grads seek the professional assistance of a career counselor or career coach, which is great. I know. I am one.
The problem is that, while a career counselor or career coach can help you with all of the logistical aspects of finding a job, they’re often not trained to help you with the anxiety, stress, depression and other emotional, relational, and psychological issues that many of us experience when first entering the work world.
This is when professional counseling and psychotherapy can be vital.
Only licensed mental health professionals are truly equipped to help you through these types of emotional, psychological, and relationship stumbling blocks, as well as teach you how to overcome them… Again, I know. I am one.
However, most mental health professionals are not equipped to actually help you find or create a new career. They can’t help you learn effective job search strategies, or with the ins and outs of networking, or create powerful, attention-getting résumés, or perform well during your interviews, or create a business plan if you decide to “go it alone.”
As someone rather unique in this field, I’ve been fortunate enough to help clients with all of these things … both as a career counselor and coach and as a licensed marriage and family therapist. And, I created Career Therapy to bridge the gap between career counseling, career coaching, and psychotherapy!
As I said, the biggest problem I see in my career counseling and career coaching business is that recent grads’ beliefs about what they want and what they can and can’t do – about what’s possible – get in the way of them achieving their goals.
My career counseling and coaching practice seems to almost inevitably lead to some form of professional counseling and psychotherapy work to help my clients see the limitations they’re unnecessarily creating and the obstacles they’re putting in their own way, as well as how to overcome them… And, they do learn to overcome them!
Don’t get me wrong… I know you’re unique. You may just need help with the logistics, or you may only need help moving past some specific psychological stumbling block…
I’ll always take the time to get to know you and tailor whatever help I can provide to meet your needs, so you’re better able to understand and emphasize your strengths, as well as feel comfortable discussing your weaknesses (we all have at least one!).
So, are you ready to better understand yourself, overcome any self-created doubts, limitations, or roadblocks to your success, and find or create the career you desire?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
Still not sure if Career Therapy is right for you?
It can be exciting to think about how much better you’ll feel once you’re finally independent and have the fulfilling and rewarding career you want most, but getting there takes self-understanding, work, dedication, focus, and a willingness to come out of your shell… I get it.
I know it’s not easy. Heck, if it was easy, you would have already done it by now.
But, you need to stop listening to that loud voice inside of you that keeps telling you why you should be afraid, that you can’t do this, that you’re not good enough, and that what you want isn’t possible.
Instead, you need to quiet yourself (try it right now)… Quiet yourself and listen to that softer voice that knows deep down inside that you CAN do anything. You just have to be willing to put in the effort necessary.
What job search or career goals do you keep putting off? What do you want to achieve in the months ahead? Who do you see yourself becoming in the years ahead?
You have an opportunity to take action and create a successful and fulfilling career and the life you dream about …
But if you don’t get started now, then when?
So, let’s make today the day that completely changes your life!
Are you ready to get started?
Yes, I’m Ready to Get Started!
Amazing things happen when we are clear and we take control of our careers, our lives, and our happiness with no apologies.
I want you to be able to bring your best and brightest self to the world and do work that you enjoy. That’s why I created Career Therapy. The support, care, and professional counseling and coaching I provide are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.
I’ll work with you every step of the way – from preparation, to application, to interview coaching, to job offer – to ensure you get the position you want most. Or, I’ll help you launch your own career or business (as someone who’s self-employed and owns and operates a couple of businesses myself, I know exactly what you need to do to get started).
Every day there are recent grads just like you who are turning their prospects around… who are finding they CAN create professional lives they love. They’re living the life they were meant to live, and they’re having fun and feeling amazing doing it.
- Imagine having the self-understanding, self-confidence, determination, and focus necessary to put you at the top of any company’s candidate list.
- Imagine being the superstar at work because you’re finally in your element; surrounded by projects and people that stimulate you and make you want to give your best.
- Imagine excelling at work because you finally have the clarity, inspiration, motivation, mental focus, and drive to pursue your career goals.
