About Karen Rose, LPCC
Finding work that you’re passionate about may seem like a fantasy, especially in today’s economic environment. But, you CAN advance your career and your life, even during challenging times. I’ve developed time-tested and proven approaches to the career development process that can help you do just that!
My name is Karen Rose, and please let me tell you… whether you’re looking for work, considering changing careers, or simply feel you’re not getting all you can from a career you enjoy, you DESERVE a career that you’re passionate about… a career that provides meaning, value, and joy.
And, I can help!
Unlike most career counselors and coaches, I’m uniquely qualified and experienced, not just as a career consultant, counselor and coach, but also as a licensed psychotherapist.
I became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in January of 1984 and, in addition to providing career guidance and advice and career counseling services for well over 30 years, I’ve supervised career counselors at John F. Kennedy University’s Career Center – where I provided training for career counseling graduate students – and career counseling interns at San Francisco State University’s Career Counseling and Development Center.
What’s more, as a woman who was born without sight, I realized early on that the world isn’t “made” for any one of us.
We each have to create our own way of thinking and getting things done. And it is with pride and joy that I have helped countless clients do just that for well over three decades.
Why should any of this matter to you?
Well, the primary focus of my life’s work has been providing outside-the-box, solution-focused career counseling and coaching services for professionals at all levels.
However, over the years I’ve noticed a gap between the services offered by most career consultants, career counselors and career coaches and my psychotherapy colleagues.
A lot of the issues I’ve seen in my career coaching practice cross over into the realm of counseling and psychotherapy – the anxiety, lack of self-confidence, depression, family and relationship issues, and the core belief issues that are so often experienced by those struggling with their careers. Unfortunately, the vast majority of career counselors and coaches don’t know how to handle these issues.
On the flip side of the coin, while most professional counselors and psychotherapists can deal with these issues, they don’t have the career and business world experience required to actually help people craft powerful resumes, conduct an effective job search, interview successfully, negotiate salaries, locate professional development opportunities, get a promotion, and so on, and so on.
All of us also tend to “bring our families” to work with us… Meaning, we bring our family relationships to work.
Many times, people who struggle with their bosses or co-workers are having the same issues at home with their spouses, parents, or children, and these issues are something the vast majority of career counselors never even consider, let alone help their clients look at, work through and resolve.
However, it is often precisely this kind of insight that can help people either find or create work environments that are different from their families, or learn to react to and treat bosses and colleagues differently than they react to and treat their spouses, parents, and children.
In fact, just seeing and understanding how these relationships relate to one another has given many of my clients more choices about how to respond differently to their bosses and the people they supervise, so they can feel better about their work environment and even get the promotions they’ve been desiring.
For all of these reasons and many others, I’ve created Career Therapy to bridge the gap between the services provided by career counselors and career coaches and those provided by more traditional psychotherapy!
My career counseling and coaching experience means I can help you figure out what career is right for you, craft powerful resumes and cover letters, create and implement an effective job search strategy, interview successfully and negotiate the salary you desire, and even create more respectful and productive working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
But, much more than this, my experience as a psychotherapist means I can also help you cope with and overcome the anxiety of interviewing for a job, the depression of being rejected, the self-esteem issues connected with having to actually search for a job, the difficulties in balancing practical needs against personal values and meaning, as well as explore deeper personal meanings, values and life dreams and connect those with your career to make sure your career provides you the purpose, satisfaction, and joy you deserve and desire.
Together you and I can make sure you have the answers you need to the most important questions, such as:
- What activities provide me the most meaning and joy?
- What am I good at?
- What type of work environment would be most comfortable?
- What do I value most in life?
- What do I need in terms of stability and security?
- What can I do to bring my personal and professional lives in balance?
- What do I need to do to move forward in the direction I desire?
And, we can work TOGETHER to connect the dots and make sure that whatever career you find or create is the answer to those questions.
Yes, if you really know what it is you need, you could hire just a career consultant or career coach or just a psychotherapist. Unfortunately, most people don’t know what issues they’re really struggling with until they start doing the work. And, then hey lose time and money going back and forth between a career counselor or coach and a psychotherapist.
But, you don’t need to know what you need (at least not to get started), and you don’t need to spend time and money on both a career consultant, career counselor or coach AND a professional counselor or psychotherapist.
You CAN have the best of both worlds with Career Therapy!
So, whether you’re dealing with the uncertainty, anxiety or fear brought about by questions such as these, you’re struggling with social anxiety issues that make interviewing difficult, your work relationships are not what you’d like them to be, you’re depressed because you’ve been looking for a job for months or even years and are having difficulty putting food on the table, or you’re struggling with questions about who you really are and what matters most to you in your relationships and in your life… the unique experience I offer that is embodied in Career Therapy can help.
I can help you articulate specific career goals, overcome professional and work-life challenges, improve your relationships and your emotional resilience, and provide the step-by-step action plans you need to turn your goals into reality.
I’ve been where you are…
As well as being a career consultant and counselor, I’ve been in counseling for the past thirty years. I personally believe we’re never done exploring who we are, and I continue to discover new ways to bring meaning and joy to the world through my work and the way I live my life.
I know I can help you do the same.
